Founded in 2014 by lifestyle maven Teri Johnson, the Harlem Candle Company manifested from her passion for scents, jazz music and the historically Black community in the Manhattan borough of New York City.  Originating in her own kitchen, her business, as per the company’s website, “is a luxury home fragrance brand specializing in scented candles inspired by the richness of Harlem”.

Since its inception, the company has included diverse items inspired by persons, places and events forever linked with the magnificence of Harlem.  These inspirations include entertainer, activist and Croix de guerre recipient Josephine Baker; acclaimed writer and activist James Baldwin; celebrated music composer, pianist and orchestra leader Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington; esteemed author Langston Hughes; the legendary Savoy Ballroom and the beautiful brownstones that gorgeously anchored Uptown.
